In honor of Mrs. Julia Child’s 100th birthday, I am reading “Julie and Julia” by Julie Powell.
It is a memoir that I thoroughly enjoyed the first time and cannot wait to read again. Mostly, I found it so amusing that someone would put themselves through the agony, frustration, and exhaustion that cooking ALL of Julia’s recipes. But I admire Julie so much for her tenacity of doing so.
She put everything on the line for this year of culinary exploration and was perhaps not as well rewarded or thought of as she should have been. Yes, she got a book deal and a movie made of that one year of her life with Amy Adams and Meryl Streep, but I’m not certain people weren’t just laughing at her rather than with her and her misadventures. Especially in the film.
In all, I adored the book. It inspires me so very frequently to be more courageous and outgoing with life, cooking and writing.
So, cheers to Julia Childs for being an amazing chef and cookbook writer but hurrah for Julie Powell for having the strength to put her life on the line to cook.
